How do you become a certified caregiver for senior care?

Caregiving skills require learning how to care for a senior’s physical and emotional care needs while also following state guidelines for senior care.

Why would states establish caregiver training guidelines?

Because quality senior care involves keeping a senior’s healthcare on track and also following best practices for caregiving for the elderly which includes being educated on aging issues such as elder abuse. Elder abuse is not only physical, but also emotional, sexual and financial and the top financial abusers are usually close family members or friends. Healthcare issues are also regulated to maintain privacy by something called HIPPA: Health Information Privacy and Portability Act.

Both the elder abuse recognition and reporting skills and HIPPA knowledge are items that all caregivers should be trained on in order to provide quality senior care and now many states do require this training for caregiver certification.

California caregivers, for instance, must have 10 hours of caregiver training which includes training in HIPPA for caregiving and elder abuse reporting.

Find caregiver training requirements in your state to become a certified senior caregiver. You may also apply for a job as a senior caregiver as there is high demand for part-time and full-time caregivers for seniors.
