A new study published in Science suggests that genetics play a major role in determining how long a person may live. Researchers analyzed decades of data from Swedish twins and families of American centenarians and found that longevity appears to be largely inherited. Healthy habits like eating well, staying active, and avoiding smoking still matter but mainly for quality of life, not necessarily for extending life far beyond a person’s genetic potential.
The idea may feel discouraging. But for caregivers, this research actually highlights something incredibly important: So while genes may influence longevity, you as caregivers influence the quality of life and that is priceless.
You may not have the power to change DNA, but you do have the power to impact a life by:
- Creating comfort, dignity, and emotional safety
- Supporting a routine and stability, especially for those with dementia
- Reducing stress, loneliness, and fear, factors that strongly affect well-being
Even the researchers emphasized that healthy habits matter because they improve function, independence, and enjoyment of life. That’s exactly where caregivers make the biggest impact. Whether someone lives to be age 70, 85, or 100:
- Being listened to matters
- Feeling respected matters
- Having familiar faces and compassionate care matters
And that’s the work caregivers do every day! Thank you for being a caregiver, we love and appreciate you everyday!
