Flu Season Best Practices: Protect YOU and YOUR Senior Clients

Handwashing-best-practices-prevent-flu

Influenza, commonly known as the FLU, is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. The flu can cause a wide range of symptoms and can vary in severity, from mild to severe.

The flu peaks in December and again in February, typically beginning in the fall, falling into the “seasonal illness” category.

The good news is now you can have an annual flu vaccination to better prevent catching this virus + if you go to the doctor as soon as you think you may have the flu, a new medication can suppress it (stop it) from developing. Practicing good hygiene, like hand washing can help prevent the spread of the virus.

The flu can lead to serious complications, especially in vulnerable populations, such as young children, the elderly, pregnant women, and individuals with underlying health conditions.

ANNUAL FLU VACCINE

The CDC recommends almost everyone over 6 months of age get a seasonal flu vaccine.

  • The flu vaccine is updated every year to keep up with the changing virus
  • Immunity lessens over time, so a yearly vaccine is needed to have the most protection
  • Immunity decreases over time, so vaccines should be given in September or October (not July or August)
  • People over 65 should get a Flu Shot and not a Nasal Spray

HANDWASHING

Good hygiene for both the caregiver and the care client is essential for maintaining good health. Preventing infection and viruses requires thinking about how to protect the client you are caring for along with maintaining cleanliness practices throughout your caregiving duties.

  • Handwashing is the caregiver’s best friend
  • Handwashing is the single best way to avoid infection with contagious diseases
  • Handwashing prevents germs from spreading

Hand Washing Tips: Sing “Happy Birthday to Me” twice: Singing “Happy Birthday” to yourself twice while washing your hands helps you remember the length of time necessary to properly wash your hands with soap and water which should be: 30 seconds = Minimum Length of Time to Wash Hands
