Away from Her by Sarah Polley

Away from Her is a quiet but powerful drama that explores love, memory, and the emotional weight of letting go.

The film stars Julie Christie as Fiona and Gordon Pinsent as Grant. Their performances feel natural and restrained, which makes the story hit even harder. There is no overacting here, just real emotion that slowly builds as the story unfolds.

The film follows Fiona and Grant, a long married couple whose life begins to change when Fiona shows signs of memory loss. She is eventually diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease and makes the difficult decision to move into a care facility. Once there, a policy requires no contact with family for the first 30 days. When Grant finally visits again, Fiona no longer recognizes him and has formed a close bond with another resident. What follows is a deeply emotional journey that explores identity, love, and what it means to care for someone who may no longer remember you.

What makes Away from Her stand out is its honesty. It does not try to dramatize every moment. Instead, it focuses on the quiet heartbreak and difficult choices that come with dementia. It shows how caregiving is not always about fixing things. Sometimes, it is about acceptance, patience, and putting the other person’s needs first, even when it hurts.

For caregivers, this film offers a meaningful look at the emotional side of care. It highlights the importance of empathy, flexibility, and understanding that each person’s experience with memory loss is different.

At Caregiver Training University, we prepare caregivers for these real life moments. Through accessible online training, caregivers learn how to support individuals living with Alzheimer’s and dementia while also understanding the emotional challenges that come with it. The goal is not just to provide care, but to provide compassionate and informed care.

Because even when memories fade, the impact of care and connection can still be felt.
