3 AI Tools Supporting Seniors and their Caregivers

As the demand for caregiving continues to grow, artificial intelligence is stepping in to ease the burden. But as the senior care industry has shown us, the most successful technologies do not replace human caregivers, they support them. AI tools are now evolving to work alongside caregivers, reducing burnouts, helping with repetitive tasks, tracking health patterns, and providing gentle reminders, while leaving emotional connection and decision-making to the caregiver and families who know their clients or loved ones best.

A recent article, “What Senior Care Can Teach Us About AI’s Future in Healthcare” by Leslie Pascaud, highlights how senior care is setting the tone for what AI implementation should look like across the broader healthcare sector. These technologies must be thoughtfully designed, preserve dignity, and empower both caregivers and those receiving care. When done right, AI can improve outcomes.

The following three tools exemplify these principles. Here are three innovative tools making a difference:

  1. Kathy: AI Companion for Memory Care
A pilot study conducted by Pacific Living Centers in collaboration with CloudMind deployed “Kathy,” an AI companion, across six memory care communities in Oregon. Kathy is a conversational AI companion designed specifically for seniors with Alzheimer’s and Dementia. It engages users in personalized conversations, helps track mood changes, and provides daily updates to caregivers and suggest interventions before issues escalate.

In a 65-day study, residents with Alzheimer’s or Dementia spent an average of 47.8 minutes per day interacting with Kathy. Some, like Barbara, who was previously socially withdrawn, spent up to 3 hours daily joyfully singing hymns and having conversations. Another resident, Carrie, experienced a 50% reduction in anxiety episodes thanks to Kathy’s calming, personalized interaction and environment suggestions.

  2. Joy: The TV-Based Virtual Care Companion
Seniors across New York are getting a high-tech helping hand right from their television screens. Thanks to a new pilot program launched by ONSCREEN, Inc. in partnership with the New York State Office for the Aging, a new AI-powered virtual companion named Joy is making waves in senior care by turning any TV into a smart caregiving platform.

Joy is no ordinary voice assistant. She’s designed to be a daily companion for older adults offering friendly conversation, cognitive games, memory-boosting activities, and even virtual painting sessions. Unlike most tech, she doesn’t require users to learn a new device or install complicated apps. She speaks through the TV, a medium that’s already familiar and comfortable to most seniors.

But Joy isn’t just helping seniors, she’s also supporting their caregivers and families. With built-in features like medication reminders, daily wellness check-ins, and auto-answered video calls, Joy sends real-time updates directly to caregivers’ smartphones. That means more peace of mind, fewer unnecessary calls, and a deeper connection without the tech headache.

  3. ElliQ: Robotic Wellness Monitor
For caregivers supporting aging loved ones at home, the latest update from Intuition Robotics offers peace of mind in a sleek, smart package. Meet ElliQ, an AI-powered robotic companion designed to support seniors’ health, mood, and well-being, while quietly keeping their caregivers in the loop.

Originally introduced as a friendly, proactive voice assistant (think: a more talkative, caring version of Alexa), ElliQ has evolved into a full Caregiver Solution. It includes the ElliQ robot and a Caregiver app that sends real-time alerts and personalized updates, no cameras or sensors required.

It initiates conversations, checks on wellness, encourages hydration or activity, and reminds seniors to take medications. Caregivers can set personalized goals (like “encourage daily walks”), and ElliQ gently nudges seniors toward them.
