Power of Pets: Improve Cognitive and Physical Function

Power of Pets

65% of aging-in-place individuals think that their pets make them feel more connected with other people.

Many older adults feel lonelier, isolated, and prone to depression. They feel like they are alone in life and that there will be no reason for them to connect with other people anymore. However, studies show that owning a pet will give them a sense of comfort and bring new meaning to their life. It will give them a new sense of purpose. If you are caring for a senior client who already has a pet, be sure to prompt interactions with their pet. If you have a client who does not have a pet, and you do have a pet, maybe you can arrange a day to bring your pet to work with you to spark the positive emotions a pet brings. You could also visit a local shelter. Or, you could take a moment for smiles and laughs by watching some “Youtube Cat Videos”…..as the saying goes, there’s always another cat video to watch!

Pets will make the seniors feel more needed and can make the seniors become more active to play with their pets or spending time with them outside, especially with dogs.

Study shows owning a pet:

  • Helps fight feelings of loneliness, anxiety and isolation
  • Reduces blood pressure: petting brings relaxation
  • Reduces stress
  • Easse the loss of loved ones
  • Prompts activity, even for seniors
  • Reduces risk of depression
  • Delivers sense of security
  • Helps with retention and memory
