New Dementia Training Now Required for Texas Assisted Living Staff

Texas has introduced Bill HB 1673, requiring Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dementia training for staff working in assisted living facilities that care for individuals with Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Disorders. This regulation took effect on September 1, 2024, with a compliance deadline for staff set by December 31, 2024. To ensure staff provides high-quality person-centered care for residents.

The mandate arises from the growing number of individuals affected by Alzheimer’s disease, which impacts nearly 7 million Americans. Approximately 48% of nursing home residents and at least 42% of older adults in residential care settings, including assisted living facilities, reports by the Alzheimer’s Association.

Training Requirements:

Key requirements for direct service staff and managers include completing four hours of training and passing a competency-based evaluation covering:

  • Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders;
  • The provision of person-centered care;
  • Assessment and care planning;
  • Daily life activities of residents with Alzheimer’s disease or related disorders; and
  • Common behaviors and communications associated with residents with Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders.

Additionally, staff and managers must complete two hours of annual continuing education on best practices for Alzheimer’s and dementia care. This requirement also extends to other facility employees, such as housekeeping, front desk, and maintenance staff.
