Birthdays can hold varying degrees of importance for seniors, just as they do for people of all age groups.
Some seniors may attach great importance to birthdays, viewing them as a milestone and a day to celebrate their life, achievements, and the people who care about them. Others may have a more laid-back attitude, considering it is just another day. Culture and Traditional background may influence others’ opinions about birthdays too.
Birthdays can provide an opportunity for seniors to connect with family, friends, and loved ones. Celebrating their birthday can foster a sense of community and reinforce the bonds they share with others.
“Birthdays are nature’s way of telling us to eat more cake.”
— Edward Morykwas
As a caregiver, we have to connect with our clients or loved ones. Here are some helpful activities you can do with them:
- Share your Birthday Dates
- Share your favorite birthday cake memory or another birthday memory
- What are your horoscope signs? You could look them up daily as a conversation topic
- Share any favorite birthday traditions you do each year
- Do you believe in special birthday celebrations at certain ages? 50th? 100th?
- Plan special activities for your care client’s upcoming birthday such as: making a photobook, listening to favorite songs, and eating a favorite meal.
