More women than men suffer from Alzheimer’s Disease, researcher’s know, partly because more women live longer. However, as 2/3rds of those with Alzheimer’s are women, researchers are now zooming in to study women’s brains. Dr. Jessica Caldwell, Director of the Women’s Alzheimer’s Movement Prevention and Research Center at Cleveland Clinic, confirms in this podcast that changing your diet to better protect your brain, at any age, will help your mind function better.
When we eat processed foods that have lots of additives and preservatives in them, we prompt inflammation in our bodies, including in the brain. The blood we pump to the brain can serve as a protective coating, if you will, but if it carries properties that cause inflammation, then it is bringing in a substance that will require additional work. Your body has to fight the inflammation.
A diet rich in pure foods and that limits meat and dairy products, research has shown will assist our body’s to function better. The Mediterranean Diet often is suggested as a guide to follow for a healthy meal plan.
