The Woman Who Lived 117 Years and the Legacy She Left Behind

Maria Branyas Morera, born in 1907, lived through more than a century of history: two world wars, the Spanish flu, and even COVID-19. She held the title of the world’s oldest living person until her passing this year at 117.

When asked about her secret to longevity, Maria never credited medicine or diets. Instead, she often said: “Stay calm, avoid drama, and keep close to family and friends”.

Even in death, Maria continued giving. She wished for her body to be studied, so researchers could learn more about aging and what allows some people to live such long, fulfilling lives.

Her outlook connects beautifully with what we’ve written before about the Secret of Blue Zones: areas of the world where many people live past 100. Like Maria, the people in Okinawa, Japan or Sardinia, Italy often share three things in common:

  • Strong social connections with family, friends and community
  • Simple, stress-reducing daily routines
  • A positive outlook and purpose that carry them through life

For caregivers, Maria’s story and the lessons from the Secret of Blue Zones show that longevity isn’t just about physical health, it’s about whole-person well-being. By fostering connection, peace, and joy, caregivers help add not only years to life, but life to years.

Maria Branyas Morera’s legacy reminds us that caring for the heart and mind is just as important as caring for the body.
