Summer brings sunshine, blooming flowers, and longer days, an ideal time to help older adult clients enjoy the outdoors. But warmer weather also means taking a few extra steps to protect them, especially when it comes to their skin.
As people age, their skin becomes thinner, more delicate, and slower to heal. That’s why summer can pose special challenges such as sunburn, dryness, rashes, and pressure sores are more likely to appear, especially for seniors who are bedridden or spend a lot of time sitting.
Why Summer Skin Care Matters More for Seniors
The skin of older adults is naturally more fragile. It can bruise easily, dry out quickly, and may not handle heat or moisture well. According to the CDC and NIH, common warm-weather skin issues for seniors include:
- Sunburn and increased risk of skin cancer
- Heat rash and fungal infections, especially in skin folds
- Pressure sores for those who are bedridden or use wheelchairs
- Cracks or flaking due to dry skin
