The Elizabeth Dole Home Care Act will enable veterans who need full-time caregiving services to no longer be forced to move into a nursing home to receive the around-the-clock care. As a vote will be coming up possibly in the coming week, and this simply allows the same money that would be spent in a nursing home to instead be spent for care in the home, let your Senator and Representative know if you support this by sending them a message (it will take less than 2 minutes).
Congress has been asked to schedule a vote on this bill which will allow veteran’s who need caregiving services to receive benefits for full time care in their home, not just in a nursing home.
Right now, the Veteran’s Administration, or V.A., has a benefit to pay for up to 65% of the cost of nursing home care only for home care services. This legislation will enable the V.A. to pay 100%.
To better address the medical needs of Veterans, the Elizabeth Dole Home Care ACT wold improve the V.A. support systems and increase access to home and community based care services.
Aging at home, delivers a better quality of life and the overall cost can be much less than the cost of nursing home care.
Rep. Juila Brownley, a Democrat of California, and Senator Jerry Moran, a Republican representing the state of Kansas, submitted this bill which means both parties agree on it! Caregivers are trained to provide care in the home and the one-on-one care delivers more care services than in a nursing home where 1 caregiver may care for as many as 10 to 12 residents.
There are 103 co-sponsors from both parties. Let your legislators know you support caring for veterans in their homes the same as in nursing homes by sending them a message here.
