Boston Caregivers Keep on Caregiving

Boston, Massachusetts, experienced a week of loss and fear and transportation difficulties this past week after the bombing tragedy at the Boston Marathon.  Senior caregivers manage emotional and physical losses with senior clients each week and when a tragedy of the scale in Boston is added, caregiving becomes even more challenging.

Our hearts and prayers are with all of those in Boston this week and especially to senior caregivers who must overcome all challenges and still make it to their senior client's home each day.

Caregivers also will be needed for those injured in the Boston bombing and both family and professional caregivers will develop the skills necessary to deliver quality care.  Caregiver stress also is a very real experience and everyone must step in to support the caregivers, especially when care needs are not accounted for ahead of time.

Caregiverlist congratulates all of those who have dedicated their life's work to senior care and as the number of seniors in the U.S.A. will continue to grow, we invite more people to consider senior caregiving as a career.  Online caregiver trainin.g is available and senior care companies nationwide continue to hire from 3 to 6 new caregiver employees each week and you may apply for senior caregiver job near you on Caregiverlist.com.

Caregivers can join in the U.S.A.'s moment of silence in memory of the Boston Marathon bomb victims and the survivors, today at 2:50 p.m.

Caregiver Tales: Happy Easter!

Chicago caregivers may run into this bunny car, parked in downtown Chicago, this weekend.  Enjoy the holiday weekend, whatever your religion may be.  Sending wishes of Spring to all caregivers!  One of the best parts of being a caregiver is sharing in all the different ways of celebrating Springtime for Americans and a cute bunny springs eternal!  Remember that caregiver stress is real, so take time for a smile and if you would like to share your caregiving story with others, please do so, as we welcome more individuals to become professional senior caregivers and apply for a caregiving job as more caregivers are needed!

April is Stress Awareness Month

There’s no doubt that caregiver stress is a huge problem. It’s an unrelenting and sometimes underappreciated job. April is Stress Awareness Month and we at Caregiverlist invite you to assess the amount of stress you feel from the burden of caregiving and take steps to give yourself some much deserved relief.

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Women’s Health Caregiver Stress sheet, caregiver stress can take many forms. For instance, you may feel:
  • Frustrated and angry taking care of someone with dementia who often wanders away or becomes easily upset
  • Guilty because you think that you should be able to provide better care, despite all the other things that you have to do
  • Lonely because all the time you spend caregiving has hurt your social life
  • Exhausted when you go to bed at night
Even though caregiving can be extremely stressful, it can also be extremely rewarding. Providing care—being there for someone and truly making a difference in their life can be much more gratifying than the average job, but what if it’s only a part of what you do?

Six out of 10 family caregivers are otherwise employed. Many family caregivers of seniors are taking care of children as well. With so many areas demanding one’s time, it is no wonder that stress and stress-related illnesses are so prevalent among caregivers. The majority of family caregivers are women (approximately 66%) and women, according to studies, seem to be more affected by the stress of caregiving. Often, caregivers feel the need to do everything themselves.

Consider some sort of caregiver training to help you better deal with the responsibilities at hand. The more comfortable you are with a job, the more confidence you have performing those tasks. That can go far to alleviate stress. Taking advantage of respite care is also important, especially for the family caregiver.

Take the American Medical Association’s Caregiver Self-Assessment. This questionnaire “is to be completed by the caregiver when he or she accompanies the patient for an office visit. By using the self-assessment score as an index of caregiver distress, the need for supportive services can be discussed, and the physician can then encourage utilization and make appropriate referrals to community resources.” Take advantage of this wonderful program at your next doctor’s visit.
You can also access services under the National Family Caregiver Support Program, contact your local Area Agency on Aging.

We at Caregiverlist are staunch advocates of Caring for the Caregiver. Whether you are a family caregiver or a seasoned professional, we appreciate that you are on the front lines, day-in and day-out, providing an invaluable service. Remember, although caregiving can make you feel cut off from the rest of the world, you are not alone. We would love to hear your story. Let us know what makes you feel overwhelmed, how you cope with stress, and why caregiving is so important to you.

Caregiver Stress: American Psychological Association Confirms

Senior caregivers well know that their work can be stressful.  Now the American Psychological Association is highlighting the link between stress and health.  Many times the caregiver of a senior can find they have additional health problems because of the stress of caregiving.  The data from the latest Stress in America survey suggests that the connection between stress and health is especially critical among adults age 50 and older who serve as caregivers for a family member.

This is why hiring a professional caregiver delivers more than just care for the senior - it also assists the senior's loved ones to maintain balance in their own life.  And it allows the senior's spouse and children and friends to enjoy quality time with them.

Managing stress in a health way is important for senior caregivers.  One quick stress reliever, which also delivers a health benefit by instantly lowering blood pressure and producing a relaxation response is the 4-7-8 Breathing Exercise.

Relaxation Breath Exercise:  The 4-7-8 Breath

This exercise is simple and does not require special equipment - we give credit to Dr. Andrew Weil.

  1. Exhale completely through your moth, making a whoosh sound.
  2. Close your mouth and inhale quietly through your nose to a mental count of 4.
  3. Hold your breath for a count of 7.
  4. Exhale completely through your mouth, making a whoosh sound to a count of 8.
  5. This is 1 breath.  Now inhale again and repeat the cycle 3 more times for a total of 4 breaths.

Now do you feel relaxed?  It works every time.  Always inhale quietly through your nose and exhale audibly through your mouth.  The tip of your tongue stays in position the whole time.  Exhalation takes twice as long as inhalation.  The time you spend on each phase is not important: the ratio of 4:7:8 is important.

As everyone is learning the value of having a professional caregiver, those who are interested in working as caregivers may apply for a caregiving job position in their area - just remember to take time to take care of the caregiver!
