With the Fourth of July holiday on Tuesday, many caregivers and their senior clients may be planning to celebrate by attending a party or grilling at home with loved ones. While old stand-bys work, the Weber Grill app offers a wide selection of recipes to try this year.
The recipes are the main star of the Weber Grill app. When caregivers first open it, they are greeted with a home screen full of photos of featured recipes, such as California Hamburgers with Guacamole Mayonnaise or Caribbean Swordfish with Mango Salsa. As caregivers scroll down, new recipes continue to populate the screen.
Caregivers can also scroll through categories of recipes by selecting the different icons at the top of the screen. Categories include new recipes, red meat, pork, poultry, seafood, veggies, dessert, etc.
When users see a recipe that they'd like to make, they can click on the photo to see all of the details. At the top, caregivers can see the number of servings it makes, the prep time and the grilling time. As they scroll down, they can also see the ingredients and the cooking instructions for the dish.
If caregivers want to make a recipe, they can add it to their Grocery List within the app and it will prepopulate with all of the ingredients that they need. Then, when caregivers are at the grocery store, they can easily scroll through the list of ingredients and place a check mark next to the items as they place them in their grocery cart.
The app also includes a built-in timer, so when you place your food on the grill you can easily cook it for exactly the time specified in the recipe. And even more helpful is the Grill Guide area. Here caregivers can pick the type of meat they're cooking, it's approximate thickness and the desired cook, if it's something like beef. Once the info is entered, the app will tell you approximately how long to cook it for to get the desired cook.

For senior caregivers, stress relief plays a large part in overall wellness. Caregiving can be a high-stress job, and caregivers might feel burnt out over time if they don't properly manage that stress. Effective methods of stress-relief include exercise, reading, taking a day off or meditation. The Meditapes app offers caregivers a tool to aid in meditation whenever they have time and wherever they are.
When caregivers first download and open the app, they must immediately decide between two soundboards. One features Keys and the other Drums. The Keys promise calming background noise, while the Drums offer deep, soft percussive sounds to help improve focus. In the paid version, caregivers can also pick between Cello and Guitar.
Once users have selected a soundboard, they can begin creating their meditative track. The app is entirely interactive. Caregivers are presented with a screen displaying gradient colors, and they can build their own track by tapping anywhere on it. With each tap, the app places a different tone and type of sound in place for a beat. It will play it repeatedly, and then caregivers can hit other places on the screen to add to the existing repeating track. A narrow circle is also created on the screen when you tap, and as the note plays out and gets softer, the circle expands. It adds a nice visual to the meditative experience.
Users can also change the type of drum being used on the track. The options include Cali Coast, Carribean Coast, Catskills, Great Lakes and more. Each one changes the overall tone of the track, and it offers a way to change up the tracks use by use.
Caregivers can listen to their audio creation on a loop for as long as they'd like. So they can create a track, and then sit or lay down with their eyes closed for a few minutes and listen to the track to destress at the end of a long day. When users close out of the track they're listening to, a screen pops up with a slider asking the user to rate their mood. The scale uses a simple smiling or frowning face to represent the mood options.
If caregivers create a track that they like a lot, they also have the option to save it for future listening or to share it with a friend. The Share option pre-populates an e-mail that caregivers can easily send to others to download the app.

With summer almost here, caregivers should take the time to do something they enjoy for stress relief. While outdoor activities are fun, it may be difficult for senior clients to spend long periods of time in the sun. But caregivers and their clients may tire of their usual indoor activities. Interior design can be a fun but expensive hobby. Luckily for senior caregivers, the Design Home app offers users the ability to virtually design several rooms without spending a dime.
When caregivers first download the app, they need to create an account to play the different design games. This includes creating a public username. Once your account has been set up, it's time to start designing a room!
The app gives each user a set amount of "money" that they can spend on virtual furniture and accessories for the spaces. In each room, caregivers will see blue circles and purple circles with an icon of the furniture type. For example, in the living room there may be an icon of a couch, another of a coffee table, and one for a floor lamp. Selecting an item for every blue circle is mandatory, while the purple circles are optional items.
When caregivers click on an icon, the bottom half of the screen will pull up the different options in that category. Users can browse the options and see their prices. Most categories have 6-8 items to pick between if that piece of furniture is required. For optional categories, there may only be one item, such as a set of magazines to place on top of the coffee table.
When caregivers tap on an item, it shows a preview of what it will look like in the room. Caregivers can tap through all of the different options, and then when they find an item they like, they can click "buy." This will place the item in the room and also add it to your collection of furniture to add to other rooms. Users can also borrow items from friends who use the app.
Once caregivers are satisfied with the design of their room, they can click finish. This will enter them into the app-wide competition for the best room design. Caregivers may also be shown other users' designs and be asked to vote on which design they prefer.
The Home Design app is available for Apple and Android platforms.

With Memorial Day Weekend behind us marking the unofficial start of summer, now is a good time for caregivers to relax a little. Good activities for stress relief include exercise, meditation or spending time on a hobby. One key hobby caregivers can revisit this summer is reading for pleasure. The Scribd app offers access to free books for caregivers to read directly on their phones.
When users first download and open the Scribd app, they first need to create an account. New users can sign up for a free trial for the first 30 days of access. Then, it costs $8.99 per month.
After creating an account, the app asks you to scroll through a variety of book categories on the screen and select a few that interest you. They are broken up by sub-catergory too to help caregivers find the categories relevant to them. Options include Career & Money, Science & Tech, Health & Fitness, Lifestyle, Personal Growth, Entertainment, etc.
The app will automatically add these selections to your personal library. It will also then uses these selections to provide personalized recommendations to you in the future. On the homepage of the app, users will see a Browse section and a Recommended section. The Browse area is organized by genre, while the Recommended section instead displays items from a mixture of genres. Once three or more categories are selected, the app will build a list of personal recommendations for the user.
The app will actually break down recommendations into books, audiobooks and magazines. Caregivers can scroll through the covers and titles to select the ones they'd like to read. Once caregivers find a book they're interested in, they can click on the cover to start reading it immediately, or to save it for later.
Once caregivers find a few items they'd like to read, they can locate them in the Library area of the app. It shows the book cover and then if users click on that, it takes them to the full text.
Caregivers can scroll through and read the book, and then when they've finished a reading session, the app will save their spot so they can pick up at a later time. Users can also create lists of titles they'd like to read to share or to keep private. Caregivers could create a list of titles they're interested in, and another of books they might like to share with a senior client.
