Senior caregiving requires many skills to enable the care delivered to be successful for both the caregiver and the senior and their loved ones. Understanding basic skills for how to safely transfer, bathe and dress a senior along with knowing eldercare laws for privacy of information and elder abuse are all needed skills. Understanding age-related illnesses and how they progress, symptoms and treatments enable the caregiver to better provide care for the senior and better understand what they are experiencing.

Looking for a new job in any field can be stressful. Particularly for caregivers in the digital age, learning the various online tools to search and knowing how to present yourself the right way to get hired can be puzzling, to say the least. The PathSource Resume app gives users the ability to build a professional resume right on their phone.
When users first open the app, they are presented with a series of intro screens detailing all of the functions of the app. After caregivers swipe through all of the options, they come to the final screen which shows them a button to begin building a resume, and a claim that it will take under 10 minutes.
The first part of the guided process takes caregivers through a list of contact information, such as name, address, etc. Then it asks for employment status. If you indicate that you are currently employed, then it asks for all of the information about your current position, such as company name, job title, dates of employment, and responsibilities. Private caregivers might list private family, individual caregiver, self-employed or another fitting phrase under the company name. The next section asks about education information, including any degrees and certificates earned in the past or ones that a caregiver is actively pursuing right now. Then, the app asks users to select the industry in which they plan to use their resume for. Home care or caregiving is not an option. Caregivers may need to settle for the closest category they can find, which might be Nursing Assistant or something similar.
Then the basics of building a resume have been completed. Caregivers can then go to the design tool and choose between several pre-designed templates available in the app. Remembering that the goal of a resume is simply to display pertinent information about your job history, picking a clean layout without too much excess frill will make your information stand out best.
When users move to export their resume, the app also analyzes it and makes suggestions for future actions to strengthen your career, such as school programs to pursue. It also provides a market outlook on job growth and salary information. Once their resume has been completed, caregivers can apply for caregiver jobs on Caregiverlist.

They say the key to forming a new habit is repetition. Once you've completed a task several times, it becomes part of your daily or weekly routine. For senior caregivers, habits might include working out for 30 minutes a day, checking in with the family of a senior client or something as small as checking in on finances once a week. The Habitify app allows senior caregivers to keep track of new and existing habits.
When users first download the app, they need to create a profile to keep track of their progress. The app offers the option to sign up using e-mail or an existing Facebook account. Then, users see the home screen of the app, which will be blank. To create new habits, caregivers simply need to click the button with a plus sign at the bottom of the screen.
To create a new goal, caregivers need to give it a name, select how often it should repeat, a starting date and designate if they'd like a reminder to complete the task. Tasks can be repeated on a daily basis, specific days or non-specific days. For specific days, caregivers need to pick which days of the week the habit should be completed on. For non-specific days, caregivers need to pick how frequently the habit should happen each week, i.e. 3 times a week.
The home screen of the app then displays all of the habits created and a bar across the top allows caregivers to click between days and see which habits need to be completed on each day. When users complete a task, they can click on it, select Done and then a blue check mark will appear next to it in the app.
Having a list of habits to complete on a regular basis can help caregivers manage the stressors in their daily life. By seeing a list of habits and regularly check them off, caregivers can more easily establish a pattern and the to-do list may seem less overwhelming. The free version of the app limits the number of habits that can be entered to only three, but if caregivers would like more then they can upgrade to the paid version of the app.

With warnings of Hurricane Matthew hitting Florida and South Carolina this weekend and potentially moving up the East Coast, staying up-to-date with the most recent information and warnings holds utmost importance. For caregivers with senior clients in the affected areas, ensuring that they're prepared for the storm and a potential evacuation is the highest priority. To stay abreast of the latest with the storm, the MyRadar app offers a look at the most recent radar data.
A radar shows any precipitation or storms in the area using a scale of severity ranging from light blue at the low end to bright pink at the high end. When users first open the MyRadar app, they only need to allow it to use their current location to get see their radar data. As a default, the app shows what the radar has looked like in your area for the past hour. Cloud formations move across the map as a ticker at the bottom updates the time in increments of five minutes. The coloring of the formations changes with the severity of the storm in real time to offer an accurate measure of the storm.
On the upper bar, caregivers can see a summary of the weather forecast for their area. If they place their finger on that top banner and pull it down, then it brings up a full hourly forecast for the next 24 hours plus a summary of the five-day forecast including the chance of rain. The detailed forecast for the day continues below that with a summary plus Wind and Pressure information. This area of the app proves useful for caregivers on any given day to get a detailed snapshot of the forecast. This enables caregivers to properly plan their day with their senior clients if they need to run errands or planned to spend a little time outside. The forecast will be increasingly useful as the winter months approach and some areas of the US might experience more extreme weather.
For caregivers currently in the predicted path of Hurricane Matthew, it is important to note that the radar does not show predictions of the next hour or two. Instead, the only data available is from the previous hour. But caregivers can follow along in real-time with the storm over their specific area to see as it hits and can get an idea of when the worst might have passed over them. However, no one should assume the storm is over and moved on to other areas until the local media deems it so. Pay attention to local news and all warnings from the government in addition to watching the storm radar on your own. There is a Hurricane Watch area of the app, but activating it requires an upgrade to the paid version.
For senior caregivers and their clients, disaster preparedness during storms and extreme weather is key. Create a plan with your senior clients and their families in case of future events. The MyRadar app is available for Apple and Android platforms.
