Find Senior Care Training

Senior caregiving has become one of the fastest growing professions because seniors are living longer than any previous generation while needing some care services for some of those year. In addition, technology has allowed seniors to age-in-place in their own homes while still staying in communication with friends, families and medical professionals.

Senior caregivers can take basic caregiving training courses to become certified as a professional caregiver and to be able to understand how to safely care for seniors. In addition, professional caregiver training.teaches caregivers to know how to identify elder abuse and how to maintain client privacy information.

California caregiver training now requires 5 hours of Orientation and Safety training prior to beginning to work with a senior client and an additional 5 hours of annual training in core competencies such as managing daily care plans, understanding elder abuse, assisting with daily activities of living, safe transfers and caring for age-related illnesses.

Find senior caregiver training requirements in your state and take an online caregiver training course to be a professionally certified senior caregiver.

How do you become a professional senior caregiver?

Senior caregivers are needed to fill the need for senior care services as the senior care industry continues to grow. More than 200 senior home care agencies provide care services in the top 20 metropolitan cities in the U.S.A. Part-time and full-time job positions are available for caring individuals to be senior caregivers.

Senior care services are regulated in each state, just like other businesses. Some states do require specific caregiver training and renewal training each year. This enables caregivers to keep up with caregiving skills and any new requirements that may have been established. For example, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act was passed in 1996 and now requires caregivers to keep any information about a senior client's medical records and personal health information private and training allows caregivers to understand what information can and cannot be shared.

How to become a professional senior caregiver to be hired by a senior care company:

  1. Read the Caregiver Job Description to Understand Companion Caregiving Job Duties
  2. Obtain a Professional Multi-State Background Check, to Check last 3 Counties of Residency
  3. Verify Background Check Accuracy of Information
  4. Organize Available Schedule to Work
  5. Learn Caregiving Skills by Reading Books and Movies
  6. Consider Online Caregiver Training Courses (Training is Required in Illinois, California and Many other States)

Remember, senior caregiving involves caring for one individual senior when providing senior care services in the home. The senior will build an emotional relationship with the caregiver which is why it is very important for caregivers to commit to a consistent schedule and be reliable. Part-time caregivers are needed but just be sure you are organized with your schedule and provide only the days and times you are truly available to work.

Background checks have evolved with technology but the negative of the computerized results is that many are returning inaccurate information. Especially if you have a common name and have moved frequently, it is more likely you will have results returned that may not be accurate for your name and social security number and this is why you should run a background check on yourself each year. Each of the background check companies offer a process to follow to correct any inaccurate information. Be careful of where you buy your background check as some resellers only offer a social security number confirmation for a name, rather than pulling information from criminal courthouse records.

Take a practice caregiver training quiz to learn about caregiving skills. Online caregiver training allows you to become a certified caregiver in states with caregiver training requirements. After you become a certified caregiver, you may consider becoming a Certified Nursing Aide. C.N.A. training requirements are mandated by a federal law, but states may have additional requirements that require more C.N.A. training hours than the federal law. You can find C.N.A. schools in your area in the Caregiverlist C.N.A. School Directory.

Online caregiver training allows anyone to learn caregiving skills and take the course at their own pace. Find caregiver training requirements in your state or just take the basic caregiver training course to get started as this course meets the requirements for beginning caregivers in California, Illinois and more states. Senior care companies hire caregivers for part-time and full-time positions each week and you can be considered for a new caregiving job by submitting your job application on the industry's caregiving career center.

Family caregivers and professional caregivers can find how others navigate the caregiving journey and learn how to better deal with the aging process by watching these caregiving movies and reading these caregiving books.

This week's stress relief photo was taken on the grounds of Blenheim Palace, near Oxford, England. It is very beautiful, and also the birthplace of Winston Churchill. Thank you caregivers and certified nursing aides for your hard work and the care you provide for our seniors. More caregivers are always needed as seniors in America are living longer. You can learn more about becoming a senior caregiver and apply for a job near you. We invite you to take a moment to relax and enjoy this week's stress relief photo and inspirational quote and share them with loved ones. We hope you have a great week.

How do you become a California Certified Caregiver for Senior Care?

California passed a state law that went into effect this year (as of January 1, 2016) which requires all senior caregivers to be consistently trained in basic caregiving skills and to take ongoing training each year.

What is the name of the new California Caregiver Training law?

Home Care Services Consumer Protection Act

AB 1217 was the Assembly Bill number for this caregiver licensing legislation and is also commonly referred to when the state's caregiver training requirements are discussed. You will hear professionals in the California senior care industry say "we have AB1217 training requirements".

What does the Home Care Services Consumer Protection Act require for caregiver training?

California senior caregivers must show they have been trained on 5 hours of orientation and safety skills and 5 hours of core competency caregiving skills each year, for a total of 10 hours of training in 2016, the first year for the California caregiver training law to be in effect. Each following year the law requires 5 hours of annual training. Think of the home care services law as requiring 5 + 5 hours of training in 2016.

Accepting Aging Brings Healthy Aging says New Longevity Book by Cameron Diaz

Aging naturally comes along with living a long life as our human biology stays in motion. Accepting this fact of life seems to be one of the biggest secrets revealed in actress Cameron Diaz's new book, titled The Longevity Book: The Science of Aging, the Biology of Strength, and the Privilege of Time. Just 50 years ago, when Medicare was created, life expectancy was only age 75. Now we are living past age 100, bringing new meaning to how we will live these additional 25 years.

My family will celebrate my grandmother's 100th birthday this month. As the oldest child of five, she has outlived all of her siblings. While she survived the Great Depression by skipping a year in school (then finishing high school at the top of her class) and worked daily doing physical labor by managing a dairy farm (yes, she milked cows twice a day, every day, for 40 years, and also home-cooked all the meals for the family and the farm workers). And now at age 99, all of her friends and family from her generation are passed away and she has the usual challenges associated with old age including loss of vision and hearing.

My family has always thought that in addition to genetics, you must possess some kind of mental ability to be resilient and to accept life's challenges in order to live a long life. That is the only way, it seems, to go through your later years when you are losing your loved ones to death each week and losing many of your physical abilities.  "Take it on the chin" is what my grandmother teaches us, then move on and have a laugh about it.

It turns out Cameron Diaz shares this advice as the secret to longevity that she discovered while researching her book. Having an accepting attitude about aging and life will deliver a side kick of happiness to get you through your older years.......looking and feeling better than those who are battling the aging process.

Ms. Diaz's 5 Longevity Lessons are:

  1. Good Nutrition
  2. Good Movement (Exercise)
  3. Good Sleep
  4. Stress Relief
  5. Staying Connected to Loving Friends and Family

In addition, planning for how you want to be cared for when caregiving services may be needed for medical issues and aging issues, also brings a peace of mind to the aging process. Few seniors have planned ahead for their caregiving needs. Research the senior care options and costs in your area now and create a plan. Talk to a financial planner (Transamerica provides free consultations on the costs of care and savings options) to enable you and your family to eliminate the stress of knowing what your caregiving plan will be should a medical issue arise in your older years. You may also receive a Caregiving Guide to assist with this part of the aging journey and take an online caregiving training course to learn basic caregiver skills if you are caring for a loved one.
