Caregiver Pay Rates April 2014

Professional caregivers continue to earn more than minimum wage, thank goodness, for providing senior caregiving and nursing aide services. As senior care needs will continue to increase, As the senior care industry continues to grow, so does the rate of pay for senior caregivers, along with the need for quality caregivers.  In April, the U.S. unemployment rate fell from 6.7% to 6.3%.  However, there continues to be a high demand for professional senior caregivers who can work both part-time and full-time to fill senior caregiver jobs.

 

 

Senior Caregiver Training

Senior caregivers assist seniors to remain independent in their own homes and sometimes also assist seniors living in assisted living communities and nursing homes.  This is because often nursing homes staff 1 Certified Nursing Aide to care for as many as 10 to 15 residents. Because of this, most seniors prefer to have one-to-one caregiving services in their own home while needing rehabilitation care or on-going senior care services.

Senior care services cannot always be administered quickly - senior caregiving, as experienced caregivers know, requires all the extra attention to detail you receive when enjoying a meal at a fine dining restaurant.  It cannot be done in fast-food style. Senior care also requires a wide variety of skills in order to understand how to cope with the aging process and promote dignity while providing caregiving services.

Caregiver training enables senior caregivers to provide quality care to seniors while maintaining a safe environment for themselves and for the senior.  By following consistent systems for the care routine, each caregiver can know what to expect and also quickly document when a care condition changes.

Certified Caregiver training verifies a caregiver has been taught the basic caregiver training skills.

Understanding how to take proper Care Plan notes, how to make objective observations and how to safely assist with bathing, meals, maintaining a clean and safe environment and making sure germs and infections are not spread.  Even tasks such as hand-washing, which is the #1 way to stop infections, must be done correctly.  

Caregivers can learn the basic senior caregiver training skills (which includes how to safely wash your hands - did you know properly drying your hands is very important, for instance?), and be confident they will deliver quality care with an online training course meeting industry standards.

Begin a career in senior care by purchasing an online certified training course and apply for a part-time or full-time caregiving job position to receive additional job training by a professional senior care company. Review the caregiver training requirements in your state as many states now do require basic training for professional senior caregivers and purchase the industry's approved certified caregiver training.

More Than 1/3rd of Parkinson's Disease Patients Suffer From Dementia.

Parkinson's disease impacts many seniors in their later years, although some people are diagnosed with the disease when they are younger, such as actor Michael J. Fox.  This week, as 3,000 experts in neurology gathered for the annual European Neurological Society (ENS) meeting in Barcelona, Dr. Heinz Reichmann shared study results involving 1,331 German Parkinson's disease patients.

The Neurology Study Found:

  • 15% of Parkson's pateints suffer collaterally from dementia
  • 11% suffer from both dementia and depression
  • 9% suffer from dementia and psychosis
  • 40% to 50% suffer from depression

Nearly all Parkinson's sufferers are affected by dementia if they live long enough.  Research reveals that cognitive decline and depression often worsen the quality of life more than the movement disorder itself and may inhibit the positive results of other therapies.

Depression is mainly caused by the dismantling of those systems which release the monoamine neurotransmitters and the malfunctioning of the frontal lobe and the cerebral cortex.  

Motor impairments in Parkinson's are often associated with an incorrect concentration of dopamine in the blood plasma.

The neurology doctors are continuing to explore and research effective treatments which include psychosocial support, behavioral therapy, psychotherapy, drug therapy as well as electroconvulsive therapy.

Senior caregivers assisting seniors with Parkinson's disease may consider continued caregiver training to keep up with the age-related illnesses.  

The European Societies for Neurology also announced a merger this week during the Barcelona meeting. Going forward the European Neurological Society and the European Federation of Neurological Societies are merging to be called the European Academy of Neurology.

 

 

 

 

Caregivers: Report Medicare Fraud and Receive Financial Reward

Medicare and Medicaid fraud have been a huge contributor to high costs of health care for seniors, with both improper reimbursements and unnecessary treatments and billings.  We are talking about billions of dollars in fraud.  The Department of Health and Human Services is now increasing the reward for anyone who reports fraud to as much as 15% of the amount recovered up to $9.9 million (and since billions of dollars in fraud has taken place, this maximum, unfortunately, is needed).  Here is their revised whistleblower reward program for those turning in companies and doctors who are fraudulently billing Medicare.
 
Medicare's new fraud alert reward has been modeled on an IRS program that has returned $2 billion in fraud penalties and unpaid taxes since 2003, the Health and Human Services Department says.
 
Senior caregivers who feel a senior is receiving medical treatment that is unnecessary or received medical doctor invoices for services that were not performed should call the Inspector General's hotline to report Medicare fraud.
 
The proposed rule would also strengthen certain provider enrollment provisions. One would allow HHS to deny enrollment of providers who are affiliated with an entity that has unpaid Medicare debt. It also would allow CMS to deny or revoke billing privileges for individuals with felony convictions, and revoke privileges for providers and suppliers who are abusing their billing privileges.
 
Under the proposed rule, HHS also would expand the ability of its Senior Medicare Patrol program to educate more Medicare beneficiaries about suspicious billing by providers that could be evidence of fraudulent activities. Total funding for all the 54 current SMP projects amounts to $7.3 million.
 
The Scooter Store has been a recent Medicare and Medicaid fraud spotlight for their laser focus on taking advantage of a high reimbursement for power wheelchairs for seniors - only they decided to give seniors cheaper scooters instead of high quality wheelchairs and even went so far as to have a network of medical doctors "approve" the senior's need for the power wheelchair.  
 
However, the federal government must also take some responsibility for The Scooter Store exploitation, simply because their juicy fees attracted The Scooter Store to play the fraud game. But of course the old reimbursements that were fat and juicy were due to lobbying by these groups.  The Wall Street Journal investigation also exposed that home health companies received a $2,000 bonus after the 10th R.N. home visit, and guess what?  The largest home health agencies always made sure they had 10 visits. This was not set-up to benefit seniors, but just another example of payments that make it into legislation due to strong lobbying.
 
Obama Care, as the new healthcare law has been labeled, does have some very positive aspects which include "accountability of care".  In addition, some Medicare reimbursements which were a bit unnecessary (i.e., would never survive in the private sector), were revamped.
 
Power wheelchairs payments were formerly paid in one lump sum by Medicare. Profits of thousands of dollars per wheelchair were pocketed by The Scooter Store immediately.  As of last year, though, this changed and a more reasonable rental fee was paid for the power wheelchairs.  Then The Scooter Store ran into cash flow issues and this, according to some former employees, stimulated even more aggressiveness to "get approval by a medical doctor" for a power wheelchair for a senior - going to 3 doctors or more and even coding doctors based on how difficult or easy it would be to get them to approve the wheelchair.
 
A whistleblower turned in The Scooter Store several years ago and this placed them under more scrutiny as they continued to push the envelope by selling power wheelchairs to individuals who did not really need one.  They even sent out direct mail promotions advertising they could obtain a "Free" wheelchair for seniors.  
 
Caregivers can help be the watchdog for Medicare fraud.  As senior caregivers are involved with day-to-day care, you have the inside view of all medical care and can quickly see when something seems unnecessary.  As more fraud is stopped, it is hope the senior care dollars will go towards actually paying for senior care.

Caregiving Jobs and Options for Spanish Speakers

Professional senior caregivers assist seniors with activities of daily living, including companion caregiving for seniors with memory loss and nursing care for seniors who need assistance with bathing and eating.  Many seniors living in the U.S.A. speak Spanish as a first language or second language and this week AARP Viva! January 2010 Unemployment at 9.7%: Caregiving Jobs Growing

The U.S. Department of Labor reported this morning that the unemployment rate for January, 2010, is 9.7%, with employment in retail and temporary work increasing.  At the same time, the health care and social service industry sector increased from 13.3 % to 17.1 % of the total job market from January a year ago - another indicator that employment opportunities in the healthcare field are indeed growing to keep up with the needs of the large baby boomer generation.

You may become a certified nursing aide by attending a state approved training program and successfully completing the state C.N.A. exam.  You can obtain companion caregiver training by working for a senior home care agency which usually will provide training as part of their new employee orientation program (some states require a specific amount of training hours for each new caregiver).  You may also take a sample or practice nursing aide test to learn more about the skills a training program will teach.

Caregiver Employment Continues to Rise

The Rising Number of Childless Seniors Spells Opportunity for Caregivers

Caregivers have another reason to celebrate their career choice, according to a report issued this week, which forecasts a growing demand for full-time care professionals.

The U.S. Census Bureau report, An Aging World: 2008, explores trends in aging across the globe, revealing that the proportion of older people will double from 7 percent to 14 percent of the total world population in just over 30 years. This translates to long-term job security for caregivers.

“The average age of the world’s population is increasing at an unprecedented rate,” according to a U.S. Census Bureau release. “The number of people worldwide 65 and older is estimated at 506 million as of midyear 2008; by 2040, that number will hit 1.3 billion.”

Caregivers might not be surprised by the staggering projections for a growing senior population, but there’s a new twist. Many U.S. citizens who are approaching their senior years do not have children to call on to provide care.

“Twenty percent of women (ages) 40 to 44 in the United States in 2006 had no biologic children,” according to the release, which raises questions about who will one day care for this sizable group of citizens.

Senior Care Jobs

Even with the slowing economy and the highest rate of unemployment in decades, there remains a strong demand for senior caregivers to meet the staffing needs of senior care companies.  Caregiverlist's Career Center connects caregiving job applicants to hiring companies in their area for both part-time and full-time senior care jobs.

Senior Home Care Agencies are constantly hiring caregivers due to some of the unique aspects of the industry: 

-Hospital stays are shorter:  a senior may be discharged while still needing some assistance while recovering from a hip replacement or other types of surgery or from an illness (and I won't even mention the fact that sometimes seniors take home a new infection from the hospital which requires a caregiver to assist them while recovering).

-Medicare will pay for rehabilitation in the home now:  Physical Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Speech Therapists and RN's will provide care in the home for a senior as long as the medical doctor gives approval.  However, these skilled professionals just provide rehabilitation care within their specialties and do not provide daily care for Activities of Daily Living which means non-medical caregivers must be hired to assist (and this is usually superior to staying in a nursing facility which does not provide one-on-care by a Certified Nursing Aide).

-Hospice care:  many times seniors who have a terminal illness will choose to have hospice care in the home and will require a caregiver to assist with their personal care.

-Memory loss:  with advancements in medical technology and treatments, seniors are living longer and the longer we live, the more our chances of having some type of memory loss increase.  Many times part-time care is required to keep everything on track for a senior suffering from Alzheimer's Disease or another form of dementia.

Senior care jobs include working as a non-medical companion caregiver or Certified Nursing Aide or as a scheduler or recruiter for a Senior Home Care Agency to keep things moving as new clients begin services and as current client's care needs change.  Most Senior Home Care Agencies provide training and there are also many community programs and associations that provide training seminars on senior care.  Caregiverlist's short job application connects your information with multiple hiring companies in your area to help meet the ongoing staffing needs for senior caregivers.
