Comprehensive Health App Allows Caregivers to Track Overall Activity

When it comes to living a healthy lifestyle, so many factors are at play together. From eating a balanced diet to getting exercise and relieving stress, it can all be difficult to track. Luckily, the My Health Diary app allows senior caregivers to quickly and easily store health information about all the different activities in one place so that they can see an overall picture of their efforts. 

Users must first create an account with the app upon downloading it, which includes identifying information and linking existing Health apps on their phone to the app. For iPhone users, the My Health Diary app can pull in information from the build in Apple Health app. This includes an Activity section with a counter for how many steps are walked in a day, in addition to other optional features that iPhone users can choose to track, such as Nutrition, Sleep and Mindfulness. 


Once users create their account, then they can set up their dashboard within the app with the widgets they'd like to use. Widgets can be added or removed from the dashboard at any time by going to the Settings area of the app. 

Caregivers can customize this section to fit the needs of their senior clients. For example, if a senior client needs to track their blood pressure on a daily basis in addition to taking a medication for it, then caregivers can record the results in the blood pressure widget to keep a record over time. This can be useful for personal information, as well as to share at upcoming doctor's appointments to make sure clients are on track.

For caregivers who want to track their own health, the exercise widget in the app will provide an idea of where they're at now and how much more activity they should do to meet their fitness goals. Another area of the app allows caregivers to set Care Items for a particular day of the week. For example, for stress relief caregivers could set a goal to take a walk for 30 minutes three times a week. This could also be used to remind caregivers of specific times that senior clients needs to take medication. 

The Files area of the app gives caregivers a space to take photos of prescription instructions or store important medical documents for their senior clients in case they need them for quick reference. To store a document, users can either upload one or take a new photo.

Stay Hydrated All Summer Using App to Track Water Intake

One of the key factors in beating the heat during the summer and staying healthy is drinking enough water to prevent dehydration. Particularly for senior clients, drinking water frequently throughout the day can mean the difference between a trip to the emergency room or a peaceful afternoon. The PlantNanny app helps senior caregivers track how much water their senior clients drink to keep them hydrated. 

When users first open the app, it requires them to create a profile detailing their weight and activity level. The app uses this information to determine how much water the user should be drinking in a single day. Caregivers who would like to use the app for a senior client should enter their client's information.

Throughout the day, as senior clients drink water, caregivers can hold down the water glass and it will record how much water they've drank. As users drink enough water each day, the plant grows accordingly. Participate in Parkinsons Study Using In-App Tests

Caregivers whose senior clients have Parkinson's disease know that it can affect movement in several ways, most noticeably in the ability to hold objects or walk in a normal stride. The Parkinson mPower study app provides in-app daily tests to gauge abilities of patients with Parkinson's and transmit the data to scientists for research purposes. 

The study is conducted by Sage Bionetworks, a nonprofit, looking to help determine why symptoms differ between individuals who have Parkinson's disease and why symptoms and side effects vary over time. The app uses surveys and tests through the phone sensors to determine daily abilities and track symptoms over time. 

Users first need to set up an account and consent to share the results of their trials from the app. A background survey that needs to only be taken once allows senior clients the chance to give the researchers background on themselves and their individual experience with Parkinson's disease.

The three main abilities the phone sensors test are gait, balance and speaking. For the walking activity, users need to place their phone in a pocket or bag and walk 20 steps in a straight line. The phone uses GPS data to track the results. 



For the tapping speed activity, users must place two fingers on the phone screen and tap back and forth as quickly as possible for 20 seconds. The app records the overall number of taps and the consistency of the timing between taps. For the voice activity, users need to record themselves saying, "ahhhhh" for as long as they can at a steady volume into the microphone on their phone. 

Caregivers should encourage their senior clients participating in the study to take each test three times per day. The app needs users to accurately record whether they are performing the activity before taking a Parkinson medication, just after taking a Parkinson medication or if they don't take Parkinson medication. On the Dashbord within the app, users can see their performance on the tests charted out over time to recognize patterns. 

Other areas of the app highlight the study, the researchers and further information on Parkinson's disease itself. The app offers tips on living with Parkinson's disease to minimize symptoms, such as healthy eating, exercise, and avoiding falls. Weight Loss and Health Maintenance Using App Helps Caregivers Stay Fit and Healthy

If you've ever said to yourself, "my diet starts tomorrow," or signed up for a gym membership only to go sporadically, you're not alone. Finding the time to go to the gym and stop by the store to stock up on healthy food options can be tricky, especially for a senior caregiver after a stressful day at work. However, caregivers can use the MyDietCoach app to not only track their exercise and diet, but also to set goals and follow through on weight loss and health maintenance. 

When users first open the MyDietCoach app, they are presented with the option to set a goal of how much weight they would like to lose in how much time. Diabetes Management App For Caregivers and Clients

Monitoring sugars and insulin on a regular basis to manage diabetes can seem like a daunting task. The mySugr LogBook app provides caregivers the ability to track their carbohydrate intake, blood glucose levels and insulin therapy for customized diabetes management. 

When users first create an account in the app, it asks that they complete a detailed profile regarding their individual experience with diabetes. Basic fields include type of Diabetes (Type 1, Type 2, Gestational, etc.), year of diagnosis, insulin therapy and body weight. It also verifies measurement units for carbohydrates and insulin for accurate tracking. 

The universal functionality of this app comes in the ability to customize your experience to best meet your personal health needs. If you have Type 2 diabetes and simply need to watch your carb intake but have no insulin therapy in place, you don't have to use the insulin fields. If you have Type 1 diabetes, there's a field to track your blood glucose levels several times a day.  

In addition to simply entering your numbers, the log also offers a multitude of other factors to attach to each entry, such as time of day, whether a reading was taken before or after a meal, if you've been exercising, or overall mood. This will help caregivers notice trends over time in their data, such as consistently low readings after exercising. This data can be shared with medical professionals if needed, too, using the data export to PDF option. 

A chart on the home screen shows blood glucose levels over time in a nice visual so users can see if their readings have dramatically risen or dropped at any point during the day. Other log options include noting when a user is feeling particularly high or low, regardless of their readings. Physical Therapy Exercise Guide Through App

Caregivers may have senior clients who need a knee or hip replacement as they age to maintain mobility and reduce pain. Recovery from a joint replacement surgery requires physical therapy as mandated by the overseeing doctor. While not meant to replace exercises provided by a physical therapist, the Pocket Physio app provides a library of images, descriptions and videos to help seniors accurately perform their exercises at home. 

The Pocket Physio app offers four types of exercises: knee, hip, hand and foot. Once a user selects a category, the app provides a choice of exercises based on how long ago the surgery occurred. The first page will explain the type of surgery the exercise corresponds with and the end goal of the exercise.

For example, one of the end goals of hand surgery is to be able to move from a complete extension of the hand to a full fist. A diagram on the main exercise page shows a progression of the movement using a set of four pictures and the videos below show the stages users go through to work towards the full fist. 

Detailed instructions accompany the videos within the app so that users of all learning types can accurately perform the exercises. Additional features of the app include the ability to set Reminders for when it's time to exercise or for a doctor's appointment. An additional Information tab in the app provides other basic tips for the recovery stage of surgery, such as how to walk with crutches up and down stairs, improve circulation, or get in and out of a car. 

The Information tab also contains tips for Pain Management. Senior caregivers should always advise their senior clients to closely follow instructions from their doctor regarding pain management and recovery from surgery, but in addition to pain killers, the app offers breathing relaxation exercises. Learn First Aid for Various Situations with Red Cross App

When unforeseen health situations that arise, senior caregivers may not know exactly what the issue is or the appropriate first aid response. The most important response in a health emergency is to remain calm, call 911 and follow the instructions of the operator. To help identify health issues and emergencies, The Red Cross First Aid app offers descriptions of the symptoms of common health issues, first aid guidelines and prevention tips. 

When users open the app, they find a menu displaying a list of topics to learn first aid for, ranging from minor to severe, such as Asthma Attack, Heart Attack and Stings / Bites. Before looking through every topic, caregivers with new senior clients can spend some time learning about the specific health issues that could arise by talking with him/her about any previous health related treatments, pertinent family health history and concerns their doctor may have regarding his/her health. Once a caregiver selects a specific topic, the next screen shows a list of steps for first aid. The steps include a list of symptoms to verify the situation and then a list of actions to take.

Within the app along the bottom bar, a center button indicates "Emergency" and includes a list of only emergency first aid for situations such as chocking, diabetic emergency and unconsciousness. Once caregivers familiarize themselves with the appropriate first aid response steps for various situations, they can visit the Tests area of the app on the bottom bar to quiz themselves on what they've learned. If caregivers spend ten minutes learning about the correct response for two different situations a day, it would take less than a month to cover all of the situations presented by the app. A hospital tab on the bottom bar also shows users the hospitals closest to them in case they need to visit an emergency room and are unsure of the nearest location. Finding New Recipes Made Easy With Gojee App

Sometimes deciding what to make for dinner can be daunting task. Grabbing a frozen dinner to pop in the oven seems like a much easier option than searching for a good recipe and making a dish from scratch. Frozen dinners often contain high levels of sodium and artificial preservatives though. The Gojee app makes finding new nutritional recipes for caregivers and their senior clients easy. 

When caregivers first open the Gojee app, they are met with a screen tiled with delicious looking photos of food and drinks with witty titles such as "Tofu For You" and "Get Sauced!" Users click on the tile with a recipe that interests them to get a closer look at the food. Some of the recipes are fairly simple to make, such as the Asian Pear, Persimmon, And Almond Salad, which requires only seven ingredients and no heat to cook. Caregivers can simply follow the directions to mix the ingredients cold and serve in a matter of minutes, possibly even faster than microwaving a frozen dinner. 

Once caregivers select a recipe that tickles their taste buds, they can browse the list of ingredients and place a check mark next to the ones they need to purchase, which adds them to the Shopping List portion of the app. Then, once caregivers visit the store, they can fill in the empty bubbles next to the ingredients as they place them in their shopping cart. Users can also view more recipes like the one they've selected. 

The app provides a wide variety of recipes, from desserts to main dishes to vegetable side dishes. Caregivers should take their own specific dietary needs as well as those of their senior clients or whoever is dining with them into consideration when deciding which dishes to make. If a caregiver is cooking for senior who is watching their cholesterol, they should skip a recipe containing whipping cream or make an ingredient substitution for something lower in cholesterol.

Shop For Groceries and Delivery to Home in Peapod App

For senior caregivers who live in urban areas and don't own a car or for senior clients who are isolated and have difficulty getting to the grocery store, keeping the fridge stocked can be difficult. Instead of facing cold the temperatures and snow that accompany winter in many parts of the nation to get to the store, senior caregivers can use the Peapod app to shop for groceries for themselves or for senior clients and schedule a time for delivery right to their home. 

Users can search for food items within the app in several different ways. If you'd like more of a product you already have at home, you can scan the barcode into the app and it will try to find it for you in their store. Users can also create lists of all the items they'll need or look at previous orders and click "Buy" directly on the product list page. There's also an area for Specials and New Arrivals that users can browse and pick from. For a more traditional grocery store experience, users can decide to "Browse the Aisles" to see foods in categories like produce, deli, bakery, frozen, etc. laid out exactly the way they are when you walk through a grocery store. 

Items that are on sale throughout the app are marked with a little red price tag icon. Once users click on a item to view the details closer, a full nutrition label also appears to help shoppers make nutritionally conscious decisions. After shoppers have added all of the items they want for this grocery trip into their cart, they can checkout and schedule a time for delivery. Orders must be received a minimum of 12 hours in advance of the desired delivery time, although during the winter and on weekends caregivers may need to schedule further in advance if they live in a popular area because time slots will sell out.

Basic Exercise Plan for Caregivers with Run 5K App

Maintaining a consistent workout plan can be difficult in the busy lives of senior caregivers, but exercise plays an important part in caregiver stress relief. For caregivers who have a tight schedule, the Run 5K app offers a chance for a flexible and effective workout, starting at a beginners level and working up to being able to run a whole 5K. 

Cardio workouts help prevent future heart issues and keep blood pressure and cholesterol levels down, among several other health benefits. The Couch to 5K program used in the Run 5K app sets caregivers up for three runs per week over nine weeks total. Users start out with a five minute walking warm up and then during the first week, they alternate between jogging for one minute and walking for a minute and a half.

After the first three workouts, the plan changes to a minute and a half of jogging alternating with two minutes of walking. The length of time spent jogging increases as the users gets further along in the program. Eventually, caregivers work up to being able to run the whole 5K distance without any walking breaks. 

The app uses the GPS system on a user's phone to track how far they've run during the course of their workout. At the beginning, users may not complete a whole 5K distance as they're alternating between walking and running. The app also uses voice cues to tell users when to start or stop walking and it allows users to play music from their iTunes within the app if they like to listen to something while they run.

Caregivers can run outdoors if the weather is amenable to their needs, or on a track at the gym. As an added bonus, the workout data including how many calories were burned can be extracted from the app and sent to the Apple Health app if caregivers use that to track calories for a day. If caregivers own a bluetooth heart rate monitor, they can also allow the app to monitor that during their run for more insight into individual health.
