Buy, Swap and Sell Clothes Using App's Online Marketplace

Shopping secondhand clothes can bring about some great deals, but it also takes time to sort through the items at each individual store. For senior caregivers on a budget, shopping at the big name retailers might be too pricey. The Vinted App brings the thrift store resale environment alive in an online community, with more sources than a physical store.

Caregivers also may be caring for seniors who need to clean out their closets and reselling clothing can be a fun way to involve the senior in an activity to use their creativity and exercise their mind.  We know seniors may not have a shirt from Free People to resell, but caregivers of all ages will appreciate this cost-effective way to buy stylish clothes that perhaps have even never been worn.

Users can list any clothes and accessories they no longer want for sale and others can browse through the listings. Upon creating an account in the app, caregivers will be asked to select the retailers they are interested in seeing clothes from. With options such as Nike, Gap, Urban Outfitters, and Free People, there's a wide variety of options to fit individual style and taste.

A quick browse through the app shows that many of the items up for sale have rarely or never been worn. The browse feature on the main homepage doesn't have an easily visible size filter, which makes scrolling through the listings to find your specific size a little annoying. However, the Shop tab features a options to drill down to size and brand, which narrows down nicely. The listings on every page also show the actual retail price and the price within the app, so caregivers can see how much money they're saving.

Some categories to browse include Tops & T-shirts, Accessories, Footwear, etc. Caregivers who use this app also don't have to go to several stores to shop, which can even be time consuming and crowded no matter if you shop at a thrift store or directly at a retailer's location.

The Vinted app is available for download for Apple and Android products.

2048 Game App Requires Strategy, Exercises the Mind: Caregiverlist Senior Care App Review

These days half of the games popular to play on smartphones are mindless, requiring the same repetitive action without strategy. One of the most popular games for smartphones now though is 2048, a game comprised entirely of strategy to combine numbered tiles until they reach the target number. Senior caregivers and their senior clients can play this game to help keep clients' minds active.

The 2048 game concept is basic- at the start, two tiles bearing the number 2 appear. When the user slides the tiles together, they combine into a number 4 and another number 2 tile appears. When any two tiles with the same number are combined, they are added together to make one tile with a larger number. The object of the game is to combine tiles together until the user obtains the 2048 tile, and then they win the game.

The extra challenge of the game presents itself when every move causes a new number 2 tile to be placed on the board. 16 squares make up the playing board, so if a player runs out of opportunities to slide tiles with the same number side by side to combine them, the board will fill up with extra 2 tiles until it's full and the game will end.

Senior caregivers can sit down with their senior clients and play this game together. The strategy required to group the same numbered tiles together in order to combine them provides important mental exercise for seniors as they age. Mental engagement plays a large part in prevention of dementia in seniors. Caregivers and their clients also may find enjoyment in strategizing how to win the game together.

The 2048 app is available for free on Apple and Android platforms.

TED Talks App Shares Insightful Ideas, Inspirational Stories: Caregiverlist Senior Care App Review

Sharing stories allows us to connect with other people through their own life experiences. The TED Talks app allows speakers to share insightful and inspirational content with senior caregivers and their clients by watching videos on their smartphones and tablets.

The organization TED aims to spread "ideas worth sharing" by giving speakers a platform to speak for 18 minutes or less about their idea worth sharing. Many times, the speakers shares a deeply personal story with the audience and relate it back to their larger topic. Disability, Aging and Prosthetics are all category options on the TED Talks app, each with more than ten videos from speakers that senior caregivers and their clients may find value in.

Under the Aging category, one of the videos focuses on, "how I'm preparing to get Alzheimer's" which senior clients could watch and spark a discussion with their caregiver or family about their own preventative measures for dementia. Additionally, the app features more categories for almost any interest- Art, Climate Change, Education, Law, Philosophy, etc. Caregivers could sit down with their senior clients and search through the database to pick out a few videos to watch together and share their thoughts at the end.

The app also opens to a Featured page at first, which shows the most popular videos of the moment, and a Surprise Me feature shows users a video at random. If a video particularly moves you, bookmark it and it will save under the My Talks area so you can watch again later or share with a friend.

Pandora Radio App Offers Free Music Streaming: Caregiverlist Senior Care App Review

Music provides a soundtrack for our lives. A certain song can take us back to a particular moment in time and evoke memories we'd previously forgotten. New songs make way for new memories. Senior caregivers can use the Pandora streaming internet radio application to listen to old favorites with their senior clients and discover new music based on automatic suggestions within the app.

Starting a station is simple. Think of the artist or the song that you or your senior client is in the mood to listen to and type their name or the song title into the search bar. The app will bring up matching titles or artists and you can click on the one you're looking for. Once you do that, the app automatically creates a station based on your selection. Typically it will begin with a song by the same artist and then play similar selections after that. If a song begins playing and you enjoy it, click the "thumbs up" icon on the bottom left corner of the screen and Pandora will play more songs like it. If you don't care for a song, click the "thumbs down" icon and the app will take note of it to avoid playing that song in the future.

The stations that can be built in Pandora vary from broadway musical selections to classical music to modern hits. Try asking your senior clients what their favorite songs were as a child or are now and build a station for them. As the songs play, your senior client may share some stories with you that the songs bring about.  For caregivers themselves, the music can be a great background noise while cleaning or cooking as well as a relaxation tool after a long day. Spend fifteen minutes listening to a calming song and let go of your thoughts before you go to sleep at night.

App name: Pandora

Available for free on Apple and Android platforms.

"Enjoy all of your stations right from your mobile phone, tablet, or e-reader. You can also create new stations, and rate songs using thumbs up and thumbs down. Pandora on mobile devices is fully integrated with Pandora on the web, so everything you create and personalize on your device appears next time you're back on the web."

Look Up Symptoms, Diseases and Medications Using the iTriage App: Caregiverlist Senior Care App Review

Sometimes when seniors have a cough or other symptoms of a common cold, we fear that it may be an underlying factor of something more serious. Using the iTriage app, senior caregivers can search symptoms to figure out potential issues in health and schedule doctor's appointments appropriately. While searching symptoms and self-diagnosing doesn't replace the opinion of a healthcare professional, iTriage can help caregivers and their senior clients get an idea of what may be causing their symptoms so that they can approach their doctor's appointment with some background knowledge and have an informed conversation with their doctor.

The app itself features a keyword search as well as a figure of the human body, allowing users to click on a problem area such as the stomach or the leg to search symptoms in that particular body part. Caregivers can click on "ankle pain," for example, and see common causes, such a "arthritis (joint swelling)." Once a cause is selected, the user sees a description of the condition, further symptoms, treatment options and the option to find medical help nearby. Medications are searchable in the same way, with lists of conditions that they treat and instructions on what to do in case of an overdose or a missed dose.

The doctor search based on nearby locations allows caregivers to find medical attention most convenient for their senior clients and in the speciality area that they may need.

The app is available for free for Android and Apple platforms.

"Do you have symptom questions? Search for health answers with iTriage Health, Doctor, Symptom & Healthcare Search app. Find medications, diseases, and medical locations and instantly get answers to your questions on your iOS device. Created by two ER medical doctors, iTriage gives you quick access to a huge healthcare & medical database in your pocket."
